Esperluette Paris

Asako Kawate, immersed in the creative world since childhood, she inspires herself with art and design in her collections which she describes as 'artistic and entertaining'.

Who are you?

I am a Japanese designer living in Paris, I studied in an Haute Couture school, then I worked as a designer in several Haute Couture fashion houses, of both ready-to-wear and leather goods. Alongside these projects I am a costume designer for the cinema, for advertisements, for the Opera...

Why did you choose to go into fashion?

First of all, there was my love of art. I was drawing all the time. I was born in Japan and grew up there until the age of 15, in a region where the people cultivated silk from silkworms in savage and sublime nature. My father is a ceramist, so I was always surrounded by creative people and living in the cycle of the four seasons. Wooden furniture, ceramics and pottery, medicinal plants, cooking, the Japanese culture of dyeing, the art of natural dyeing on silk and the art of the weaving loom...

Can you describe your creative universe to us?

My first collection was called 'Pop-up Dress', the idea was to create an object (here, a handbag) which transforms itself into a wearable and elegant silk dress. I also have pieces based on the theme of optical illusions, and accessories inspired by magic tricks.

What are your sources of inspiration?

Art and design, the composition of colours, and old classic films.

How do you go about making your designs?

I create the canvas of all of my models by volume, I know how the body moves, it is very important for comfort. I add or remove volumes to develop the design. I practice a lot of couture finishing techniques such as covered buttons, fabric covered presses, hand-sewn hems ... I choose French and Japanese silk and the entire process of creating the silk designs is carried out in Paris.

Can you tell us a few words about your collaboration with MonDéfilé?

Firstly I would like to say a big thank-you to MonDéfilé for having proposed a collaboration with myself. I am so enthusiastic about the idea of knowing how this can evolve, and I am very curious to discover this new platform for proposing designs and distributing designer collections. The idea is truly brilliant!

If you could be a piece of clothing or an accessory what would you be?

A silk multi-coloured dress.

"To make clothes is to create a sculpture and paint the body."
