Milkwood

Founded in 2013, Milkwood is a workshop of illustration gathering illustrators, motion-designers and art directors.

Who are you?

We are 2 to have founded Milkwood: Léo, the graphic designer, and Fabien, the project manager. It is at the time of a meeting in a studio of creation specialized in the cinema that we decide to found the Workshop. In 2014, Pierre-Julien (illustrator), Valentine (motion-designer) and Hugues (art director) integrate the Workshop. Sheina, the illustrator, joined us in 2015.

Our project is to create a place favourable with the creation which associates competences and the styles for more creativity and of quality. We express ourselves on supports as varied as the poster of film or the textile.

Why did you choose to go into fashion ?

As illustrators, it was interesting for us to try and experiment the very particular requirements the world of fashion imposes. Contrary to other types of supports, clothing cannot only be an aesthetic creation. It also has to bring a strong, identifiable and federating message. It was therefore not an easy exercise, but it allowed a very stimulating freedom of tone. To express an idea that can be seen by the largest number of people is eventually the goal of any creation. And fashion definitely allows that.

Could you describe to us your creative universe ?

The workshop is made of as many atmospheres as the number of our illustrators. That is what makes its strength. Each one brings his own artistic sensibility into a common project. This creativity and diversity makes a whole. You could compare it to a Russian doll which would have a specific variation for each of its sizes.

What are your sources of inspiration ?

Our sources are very diverse as per our different universes. But we still have common influences, such as tattoo, the Beat generation or urban culture in general.

How do you manufacture your pieces ?

We always start with choosing a theme to make the first illustrations. The manufacturing of the garment, the choice of fabrics, colors and shapes happens next. We think the way the garment is manufactured is very important as the garment has to be in the continuity of the illustration, puts it forward and points out its details.

Could you tell us a couple words about your collaboration with MonDéfilé ?

We are very happy with this collaboration. As illustrators, the expertise and the support that the MonDéfilé team can bring us in term of design and manufacturing of garments are a very important asset.

If you were to be a piece of clothing or an accessory, what would you be ?

A tee-shirt ! It is one of the basics in a wardrobe. It is a simple but unique garment in the message it carries.

"Each one brings his own artistic sensibility into a common project."
